Digital Tax Reporting for Taxi Drivers
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment
HMRC is changing how self-employed taxi drivers report their income. Instead of one annual tax return, Making Tax Digital (MTD) requires quarterly digital updates through approved software. This applies whether you drive for Uber, Bolt, work with a local firm, or operate independently.
WHAT?
MTD ITSA is a government initiative by HMRC to transform how landlords and self-employed individuals report their income.
WHY?
The system aims to reduce errors in tax reporting and help taxpayers manage their tax affairs more effectively throughout the year.
WHO?
The requirements apply to self-employed individuals & property landlords. Eligibility is determined by total qualifying income from these sources.
WHEN?
The mandate commenced from April 2026 for those with qualifying income over £50,000. The threshold reduces to £30,000 from April 2027 & to £20,000 from April 2028.
What Income Counts Toward MTD Thresholds?
Your Total Taxi Earnings Determine When MTD Requirements Begin
Qualifying income means your gross taxi earnings before expenses and property businesses. This includes all fares from apps, card payments, cash jobs, and any other self-employed driving income. It does NOT include wages from employed work (PAYE), pension income, or savings interest.
April 2026
- MTD for IT applies to individuals with annual self-employment or property income of more than £50,000.
April 2027

April 2028
